What is the Australian Student Visa (Subclass 500)?
The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to study full-time at a registered Australian education provider (CRICOS-registered institution). It is the primary visa for international students wishing to undertake courses in Australia, from short English language programs to doctoral degrees.
Key Requirements
1. Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
Before applying for your student visa, you must have a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered institution. Your institution will provide this document after you have accepted your offer and paid any required deposits.
2. Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) Requirement
The GTE requirement is one of the most important — and most misunderstood — aspects of the student visa. You must demonstrate that your primary purpose in coming to Australia is to study, and that you intend to return home after your studies.
3. English Language Proficiency
Most student visa applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved test such as IELTS (minimum 6 overall), equivalent TOEFL iBT or PTE Academic.
4. Financial Requirements
You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your first year's tuition fees, living costs (currently AUD $29,710 per year), and return airfare.
5. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
All student visa holders must hold OSHC for the duration of their visa.
Work Rights
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. There are no restrictions on work during scheduled course breaks.
